Canadian Solar to Deliver 960 MWh Energy Storage System in South Australia

Canadian Solar has announced that its subsidiary, CSI Solar Co., Ltd.'s e-STORAGE division, has signed a contract with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) for the delivery of a massive 240 MW/960 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Summerfield, South Australia. The agreement, facilitated through CIP's fifth fund, Copenhagen Infrastructure V, marks a significant step forward for renewable energy infrastructure in the region.

e-STORAGE, a global leader in energy storage solutions, will provide turnkey engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) services for the project, encompassing the supply and integration of more than 200 SolBank 3.0 battery containers. Construction of the Summerfield BESS is anticipated to commence in 2025, positioning it as one of South Australia's largest battery energy storage initiatives.

In addition to the construction services, e-STORAGE will also support the long-term performance and operational management of the project under a service agreement with CIP. Leveraging its strong and experienced project delivery team in Australia, e-STORAGE has already delivered or is in the process of constructing several BESS projects in the country.

Colin Parkin, President of e-STORAGE, added, "We are honored to be chosen by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) for the Summerfield project, which underscores e-STORAGE's advanced battery technology and robust execution capabilities. This project will greatly aid South Australia in achieving its goal of 100% renewable electricity generation by 2027. With over 1.5 GWh of BESS currently under construction in Australia, e-STORAGE is solidifying its position as a premier product and service provider in the region."

Situated in Murraylands, approximately 55 kilometers east of Adelaide near Mannum, the Summerfield project aims to support the South Australian Government's target of achieving 100% net renewable energy by 2027. By storing excess wind and solar energy generated during the day and supplying renewable power during peak demand periods, the project will play a crucial role in stabilizing the grid and ensuring affordable power to households and businesses when needed most.

Jon Hammer, Partner and Head of Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) Australia, commented, "This milestone marks a significant step for the Summerfield project and CIP's broader renewable energy portfolio in Australia. Australia's need for large-scale battery energy storage solutions to enhance grid stability and provide reliable power underscores the importance of this collaboration with Canadian Solar's e-STORAGE. We are proud to support the South Australian Government's ambitious renewable energy goals."
